Disease progression

As the disease progresses and kidney function deteriorates and other symptoms of a very ill dog including thin body condition, dehydration, pale colour of the mucous membranes, uremic breath odour (smells like rotten fish), and oral ulcerations may become evident. In summary, the dog is slowly poisoning itself to death by failing to filter out the toxic waste products from the blood.

The early diagnosis of JKD in Boxers can easily be missed, as frequent urination and excessive water consumption is often mistaken for the normal behaviour of active dogs. It is often the onset of these more severe symptoms that will be the first signs that something is wrong with the dog.

It is important to have regular vet visits and clinical testing performed to determine the progress of the disease. The amount of kidney damage can be determined and treatment will depend on the remaining kidney function. The tests are used to determine the Stage under the IRIS system Institute of Renal Interest Society.
More information can be obtained directly from the IRIS website and through the Treatment page
