FB 43. To continue the JKD saga, several vets have reported that there is a good article describing a JKD case and attempted therapies upon it in a recent veterinary journal, and I am urged to respond, even by a nephrologist. So I hope to do so quickly. I have also written to the author of the article asking if the owner might like to offer a swab for the new genetic study.
Aside from this it is beginning to look like we will get broad support across the breed for the new research effort as offers of swab samples from the general UK Boxer population are coming in. About 50 have already been promised. I go to Birmingham National show this coming Friday to take swab collections from any dogs offered and also hand out kits for owner use on their home dogs. I’ll be Bath and S. Counties shows for this purpose too. Several people have offered to do the same at other events, including social events, matches, parties etc. There are offers by others to do the same at the upcoming breed and championship shows, including the SKC, and no doubt later shows will be covered too
Meanwhile, our molecular geneticist has now confirmed that he will use samples from affected JKD cases (and parents too) from abroad if owners would send him swabs and details, but he will need samples from the general Boxer populations too. It is all going very fast now so this is the time to do something if you want to help.
